The Network Explorer is your interactive map that lets you move from a high-level network view down to individual assets like feeders, transformers, and meters.
Use it to explore how your network is connected, view asset information, and access key analytics such as network voltage, load distribution, and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) penetration.
This guide walks you through what you can access at each level of the network, how to move between them, and where to find additional insights throughout the platform.
How to use the Network Explorer

After logging into Gridsight, click on "Network Explorer" in the left-hand side panel to open it.
Page Orientation
On the Network Explorer page, there are 6 sections that will help you navigate and explore the data in the network. These are shown in the figure below.
A. Network Map - An interactive map of the electrical network that allows you to drill down from substations to individual assets and customers.
B. Map Views - A set of map layers that visualize network voltage, utilization, and hosting capacity across the selected portion of the grid.
C. Map Settings - Controls for customizing which assets, symbols, and data layers are visible on the map.
D. Date Selector - A tool for filtering the map and asset data to a specific time period and level of granularity.
E. Search Bar - A search tool for quickly locating network assets or addresses and navigating directly to them on the map.
F. Information Panel - A panel that displays detailed information, metrics, and related tabs for the currently selected asset.

A. Network Map
A. Network Map
The Network Map provides an interactive way to drill down into the network and inspect individual assets. Upon opening the Network Explorer, the map displays the locations of all substations in the network, denoted by circles with a "Z" in the center. Clicking on any substation reveals its associated downstream elements, each of which can be clicked into further, all the way down to the individual customer level.
Network Assets and Associated Icons
The assets displayed on the map are represented by the symbols shown in the table below. The "Visibility Layer" column indicates which upstream asset must be selected for its downstream assets to appear on the map (for example, overhead lines for Substation X are only visible when Substation X is selected).

All assets are interactive. Clicking on any asset surfaces information associated with the asset in the Information Pane on the right side of the screen. Downstream components of the selected asset gain a red highlight on the map to show connected assets and customers.

The map supports multiple views that provide visibility into network voltage, load usage, generation, and capacity. You can select a view from the button on the bottom left of the map (defaulted to Customer Voltage Compliance).
Clicking on the button reveals the following options:
Customer Voltage Compliance - Voltage health of the network, highlighting any under-voltage or over-voltage across a particular substation.
Utilization (Forward or Reverse) - Load or generation usage across the substation and its impact on asset utilization.
Capacity (Load or Generation) - Network capacity to connect additional load or generation sources to the primary network.
Network Voltage Visibility
In the Customer Voltage Compliance view, each asset displays two triangles above its icon. The top triangle represents V99 (the typical high voltage) and the bottom triangle represents V1 (the typical low voltage) for the selected time period.
V1 represents the 1st percentile voltage, showing the typical low voltage while excluding extreme low-voltage outliers.
V99 represents the 99th percentile voltage, showing the typical high voltage while excluding extreme high-voltage outliers.
The color of each triangle indicates the severity of the voltage condition. The legend showing the corresponding voltage ranges can be found in the Settings panel.
Network Loading Visibility
The Utilization view provides visibility into load and generation usage across the network and the loading impact on all upstream assets. Forward refers to load usage (from grid to customer) and Reverse refers to generation injection (from customer to grid).
The Utilization view provides visibility into the loading of four asset classes:
Feeder Loading:
At the substation level, an icon depicts the utilization of each downstream feeder. You can click on either one to select that specific feeder. In this example, there are two green bars, meaning the maximum utilization the two feeders on the substation is ≤70%.
Note: The feeder utilization is calculated based on the feeder rating (provided by the distribution engineering team or the circuit breaker rating) and the nominal operating voltage.
Line Loading:
Line segments on the map are color-coded based on their maximum utilization. The line rating is calculated based on the conductor's minimum amp rating, the feeder operating voltage, and the number of phases on the line. The legend showing the corresponding utilization ranges is available in the Settings panel:
Red: >100%
Orange: >85%
Yellow: >70%
Green: ≤70%
Higher utilization indicates that a line segment is operating closer to its capacity limits, which may highlight potential constraints or areas of increased network stress.
Service Transformer Loading:
In the utilization view, all service transformers have columns extending up to indicate the load and utilization of the transformer. These columns are made of up to three colors above the asset icon.
Dark purple: Peak Load or Peak Generation of the transformer within the transformer rating.
Transparent purple: Remaining available capacity within the transformer rating.
Note: The transparent purple can be turned off in the Map Settings to help only visualize distribution of load or generation in the network.
Red: Load exceeding the transformer rating.
Note: If a service transformer rating is not available in the platform, the entire column will appear red.
Customer Loading:
When a specific Service Transformer is selected, individual customers display columns showing their peak utilization for the selected time window.
Network Capacity Visibility
In the Capacity view, line segments on the map are colored based on their remaining capacity for the selected mode (load or generation). The legend showing the corresponding capacity ranges can be found in the Settings panel. Lower remaining capacity indicates that a segment has limited ability to support additional load or generation, while higher values highlight areas with greater available headroom.

The Settings panel can be opened by clicking the settings icon next to the map layers button. It gives you control over how assets are displayed on the map, as well as information about the different symbols.
Key features of the Settings panel:
All map icons (assets, coloring, etc.) can be turned on or off using toggles and eye icons.
Tip: Turning the "Service Transformer" layer off can reduce clutter and help better visualize the underlying network assets.
At the bottom of the Settings panel, in the More Options section:
Hide Upstream Network - Hides every icon and asset upstream of the selected asset, allowing you to focus on the selected asset and its downstream elements only. (Tip: Helpful for focusing on a single feeder.)
Hide TX Rating Columns - Hides the transformer rating columns in the Utilization view. This allows you to see only peak load usage and generation injection, reducing map clutter.
Disable Autozoom - Removes the automatic zooming behavior when selecting assets.
Hide Gray Triangles - Hides voltage triangles in the Customer Voltage Compliance view where there is no voltage data available, allowing you to focus only on assets with data for the selected time period.
Satellite View
In the bottom right-hand corner of the map, you can toggle between map and satellite view. This can give you a better understanding of the physical environment around the assets and customers you are analyzing.

The Date Selector allows you to navigate to the time period of your choice. The selected time period filters the data shown on the map and associated tabs to only that period. It is located at the top right of the screen. Clicking on the date icon opens a dropdown that allows you to select a time period or choose "Go to most recent data".
To change the granularity of the data, you can choose from Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or All Time views to select different date ranges.
Note: The All Time view does not show data in the Customer Voltage Compliance map view.

To search for assets in the Network Explorer by name, use the search bar in the top right-hand corner or press Ctrl + Spacebar. The search bar supports the following asset types:

Clicking on the asset selector dropdown (defaulted to "All Types") allows you to filter your search to a specific asset type.
Search By Address
The toggle on the top right-hand side of the search bar switches to Search by Address mode. Once an address is entered, the Network Explorer zooms to that location and opens the service transformer closest to the selected address.

The Information Pane displays detailed information and tabs for the currently selected asset. If no asset is selected, it shows a list of the network's substations along with their associated V1 (typical low voltage) and V99 (typical high voltage) values for the selected time period.

The DER tab provides a snapshot of all detected distributed energy resources connected to the Substation. For each DER type (batteries, EV chargers, and solar PV), the table shows:
Count: The number of customers where this DER type has been detected.
% Customers: The proportion of total customers on this network segment with that DER type.
Generation: The estimated solar PV generation (where applicable) over the selected time period.
Load: The additional demand contributed by DERs such as EV chargers.
This view helps you quickly understand the mix of DERs influencing voltage, load, and power flows, and the penetration of each technology across the network segment.

The Voltage tab displays the Aggregate Customer Compliance Bandwidth chart, which shows the overall range of voltages experienced by downstream customers during the selected time period. The blue line represents V1 (typical low voltage) and the purple line represents V99 (typical high voltage).
This helps you quickly assess whether the Substation is operating within acceptable voltage limits, how voltage varies across seasons, and how tightly customer voltages are clustered throughout the year.

The Power tab provides an overview of load and generation at the selected Substation. It includes two calculation methods - Estimate and Meter Sum - which represent different ways of deriving total load and generation from available meter data.
Meter Sum reflects the direct aggregation of available meter data. While this provides a raw view of measured values, it may be incomplete due to missing data, limited interval meter coverage, or anomalies.
Estimate adjusts for these limitations by filtering out outliers and accounting for gaps in metering coverage to produce a more representative view of total load or generation. This method is generally preferred for analysis, especially when meter coverage is incomplete.
The default view highlights peak load or generation over the selected time period, along with an overall indication of data quality. Expanding the data quality section provides additional context on how the values are calculated and how reliable they are. In general, higher interval meter penetration and data completeness indicate stronger coverage of real measurements, lower outlier counts suggest more stable data, and higher confidence indicates that the estimate closely reflects observed meter behavior.
The following metrics are displayed:
Headroom Load/Generation: The remaining capacity at the Substation after accounting for current load or generation.
Outliers: The number of customers excluded from estimation due to anomalous behavior. This includes all non-residential customers.
Interval Meter Penetration: A breakdown of interval, accumulation, unmetered, and total customers, indicating how much of the network is covered by high-resolution meter data.
Data Completeness: The percentage of expected data that is present over the selected time period.
Confidence: A qualitative measure (High, Medium, Low) based on median normalized error, indicating how well the estimate represents actual conditions.
The Substation Loading chart shows the peak loading in both the forward and reverse direction for all time.
You can toggle methods on and off by clicking legend items. Clicking a legend title isolates that method; clicking the checkbox toggles that method on or off.
The Active and Reactive Power timeseries charts below display data for the time period selected in the Substation Loading chart.

The Primary Feeders & Service Txs. tab lists the Primary Feeders and Service Transformers downstream of the selected Substation. Click Expand to view more details.
To select a Primary Feeder, you can click:
A line segment on the map.
A name in the Information Pane.

The DER tab provides a snapshot of all detected distributed energy resources connected to the Primary Feeder. For each DER type (batteries, EV chargers, and solar PV), the table shows:
Count: The number of customers where this DER type has been detected.
% Customers: The proportion of total customers on this network segment with that DER type.
Generation: The estimated solar PV generation (where applicable) over the selected time period.
Load: The additional demand contributed by DERs such as EV chargers.
This view helps you quickly understand the mix of DERs influencing voltage, load, and power flows, and how widespread each technology is across the network segment.

The Voltage tab displays two charts for examining downstream customer voltages aggregated to Service Transformers.
D-Sub Voltage Distributions
This chart displays the voltage distribution across all customers underneath transformers downstream of this feeder for the selected time period. You can toggle voltage compliance lines on and off.
Voltage by Distance
This chart shows voltage measurements across the Primary Feeder, with each point representing a Service Transformer. Voltage values are derived from customer meters downstream of each transformer.
The x-axis displays the distance from the feeder head, and the y-axis shows the selected voltage metric. You can toggle between Vmin (minimum voltage), V1 (typical low voltage), V99 (typical high voltage), and Vmax (maximum voltage). V1 and V99 provide a view of typical voltage conditions while reducing the impact of outliers.
This chart helps visualize how voltage changes along the feeder, including potential voltage drop as distance from the feeder head increases, and highlights areas where customers may experience low or high voltage.

The Capacity tab shows an overview of load and generation capacity for the Primary Feeder. It allows you to simulate how a new interconnection impacts the feeder's capacity on the load or generation side.
This tab is currently in beta. More documentation will be added soon.

The Voltage tab shows key transformer properties and tap settings to help you understand operating context and assess whether tap changes may be required.
The following charts are available:
Aggregate Customer Compliance Bandwidth (V1–V99)
Displays the typical voltage range customers experience, from V1 (typical low voltage) to V99 (typical high voltage), allowing you to quickly assess overall compliance.
Aggregate Customer Voltage Distribution
Shows how customer voltages are spread across the network, highlighting common voltage levels and any over- or under-voltage clustering.
TX Monitor Voltage Timeseries
Plots transformer voltage over time to identify trends, cycles, and events affecting voltage performance.
Note: Most utilities have very limited access to transformer monitor data, so it is not unusual for this chart to be blank for most of the network.
Tapping Mode
Tapping Mode lets you simulate transformer tap changes directly on the map so you can assess how different tap positions would affect customer voltage performance before making adjustments in the field.
When you enter Tapping Mode:
The transformer you are adjusting is highlighted (e.g. tx11_1 in the screenshot).
You can step the tap up or down using the on-screen controls.
The Tap Setting indicator (e.g. 3/5) shows the transformer's current recorded tap position from your asset system. This is sourced from your source data (i.e. normally from your Geographic Information System [GIS] or Common Information Model [CIM]).
As you adjust taps, the voltage charts and voltage triangles on the map update dynamically, allowing you to compare customer compliance, average voltages, and voltage distribution under the simulated setting.
Customers on the map display color-coded indicators (green/orange/red) reflecting whether the simulated tap maintains or improves compliance across the LV network.
Tapping Mode is designed to support fast, data-driven decision-making. It helps you predict whether raising or lowering the tap will resolve voltage issues across connected customers, and whether the change could create new over- or under-voltage risks elsewhere on the network.
To finish, select Exit Tapping Mode and the dashboard returns to normal operation.

The TX Loading tab provides an overview of load and generation at the selected Service Transformer. The top panel compares different methods used to assess transformer load and generation, each using a different source of data or estimation approach.
Meter Sum reflects the direct aggregation of downstream customer meter data without estimation adjustments. While this provides a raw view of measured load or generation, it may understate loading when interval meter coverage is limited or data is missing.
Estimate uses downstream customer meter data while filtering outliers and accounting for missing or incomplete data to estimate transformer load or generation. This method is generally preferred when interval meter coverage is incomplete.
Each row displays the peak loading for the selected time period relative to the transformer rating. Expanding a row reveals additional details about how the value was calculated and how reliable it is. In general, higher interval meter penetration and data completeness indicate stronger coverage of real measurements, lower outlier counts suggest more stable data, and higher confidence indicates that the estimate closely reflects observed transformer behavior.
The following metrics are displayed:
Outliers: The number of customers excluded from the estimate due to anomalous behavior. This includes all non-residential customers.
Interval Meter Penetration: A breakdown of interval, accumulation, unmetered, and total customers, indicating how much of the transformer load is covered by high-resolution meter data.
Estimated Metered Active Power: The proportion of the transformer load or generation derived from metered data after estimation adjustments.
Data Completeness: The percentage of expected data that is present over the selected time period.
Confidence: A qualitative measure (High, Medium, Low) based on median normalized error, indicating how well the estimate represents actual transformer behavior.
The TX Loading chart shows the selected methods across time for the chosen date range. You can change the date range granularity (day, week, month) to adjust the resolution of the chart.
You can toggle methods on and off by clicking legend items. Clicking a legend title isolates that method; clicking the checkbox toggles that method on or off.
The timeseries chart below displays data for the time period selected in the TX Loading chart.
Data in CSV format can be downloaded by pressing the download icon.
For the Phased TX Monitor Power Timeseries, you can toggle between:

Note: Transformer monitor data is not available for most transformers, so it is common for this chart to be blank across much of the network.
The Load Duration Curve shows how long the transformer operates at different loading levels over the selected time period. This is useful for understanding typical utilization, how often the transformer approaches its rating, and whether it experiences sustained periods of high loading or reverse power flow.

The Secondary Circuits tab provides information for the Secondary Circuits connected to the Service Transformer. A Secondary Circuit is a distinct circuit running off a Service Transformer in parallel to other circuits. They are often fuse-protected on each phase.
The following charts are available:
Meter Summation Active Power
Shows total active power measured across all meters. You can toggle on specific customers for deeper analysis.
PQ Meter Summation Phased Power
Displays combined real (P) and reactive (Q) power, with options to toggle between phases and power types.
Customer Voltage Timeseries
Plots voltage over time for customers on the circuit, with phase toggles for deeper investigation.
Note: Power measurements are a sum of downstream metered customers and may not represent the total load seen at the circuit head.

The Solar PV section provides a detailed view of a customer's solar system, including detected system size, inverter characteristics, export behavior, and compliance with static export limits and compliance standard requirements. It highlights whether the system is exporting within allowable limits and whether inverter limiting or voltage-response curtailment is occurring.
The Solar PV Timeseries chart shows measured export, modelled generation, and any voltage-response curtailment across the selected time period, helping you understand system performance and identify potential compliance or voltage-driven issues.

The Voltage tab summarizes how a customer's voltage performed over the selected time period.
Voltage Compliance
Highlights the typical voltage range from V1 (typical low voltage) to V99 (typical high voltage), making it easy to see whether the customer stayed within statutory limits.
Voltage Distribution
Shows how the customer's voltage values are spread across the period, helping you identify consistent over- or under-voltage trends and how tightly clustered their voltages are.

The Power tab brings together key charts that show how a customer's load and power behavior change over time.
Customer Loading
Displays the minimum and maximum power measured at the service delivery point (SDP) for all time, giving a quick view of typical and peak loading. You can use the time interval selector to select different ranges of data from the chart.
Meter Summation Active Power
Shows aggregated active power across all phases, helping you understand total customer demand at a glance. This chart aligns with the time period selected in the Customer Loading chart.
Power Timeseries
Provides a detailed, continuous view of power over time. The same full-resolution chart is also available in the Timeseries tab. This chart aligns with the time period selected in the Customer Loading chart.

The Timeseries tab provides detailed, high-resolution views of a customer's electrical behavior over time.
Power Timeseries
Continuous power data across the selected period. You can toggle between Active Power (P), Reactive Power (Q), Apparent Power (S), and Power Factor (PF).
Voltage Timeseries
Voltage measurements plotted over time to reveal trends, fluctuations, and compliance issues.
Calculated Loop Impedance Timeseries
Estimated loop impedance values over time.
Note: Gridsight calculates the secondary impedance of each service point by correlating the change in current with the change voltage. Missing values indicate insufficient data for accurate calculations.
